Center For Sight Optometric Physicians Named on Newsweek’s ‘America’s Best Eye Doctors’ List

SARASOTA, Fla. (July 29, 2021) – Two Center For Sight optometric physicians, Joseph Sowka, O.D., F.A.A.O., Diplomate and Lori Vollmer, O.D., M.S., F.A.A.O., were named on Newsweek’s 2021 ‘America’s Best Eye Doctors’ list. The husband-and-wife duo started at the practice in 2020 and are the lead optometrists at the Jacaranda Boulevard location of Center For Sight.

Over 10,000 industry members including ophthalmologists, optometrists, clinic managers and other healthcare professionals were surveyed, asking them to recommend the best eye doctors in the United States. The publication’s goal was to compile a list of doctors who have earned the most respect from their peers based on clinical excellence, continuity of care and the quality of technology used in their practices. Of 150 doctors on the list, Sowka was ranked No. 4 and Vollmer was ranked No. 138 out of more than 50,000 optometrists in the United States.

“It’s an honor to receive this award as it has been bestowed upon us by fellow eye care professionals, which is truly the highest compliment,” Sowka said. “We are grateful for the confidence and support of our industry peers who selected us to receive this designation. We feel humbled to receive this national recognition for doing what we love in a welcoming, supportive community, and must also extend our gratitude to our patients, who entrust us with their care.”

Sowka received his bachelor’s degree with distinction from Cornell University and his doctor of optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University. He has become a diplomate in glaucoma through the American Academy of Optometry. Sowka has an impressive resume, having been a professor at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Optometry for 28 years, has written hundreds of peer-reviewed manuscripts and publications and plays a pivotal role in the planning and execution of optometric conferences throughout the country.

Vollmer earned her undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida. Vollmer completed an ocular disease residency in Miami and received her master of science in nutrition from the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University.
