Study Raises Concern Over Plug 
The Medennium SMARTPlug may be associated with an increased incidence of canaliculitis. Initial treatment for dry eye typically includes artificial lubricating tear drops to wet and smooth the dry and irregular surface of the eye. Punctal plugs are often used as the next measure to treat those patients whose response to drops is unsatisfactory. The plugs work by blocking the outflow of tears and increasing the patient’s own natural tears on the ocular surface.
