Founder and Director of Cataract & Lens Replacement Surgery
Location: Sarasota, Venice and Englewood
David Shoemaker, M.D. founded Center For Sight over 25 years ago with the mission “To bring clear vision to life through caring and trusting relationships and the unending pursuit of excellence in eyecare.” Dr. Shoemaker is what is known as a “super specialist,” a doctor who devotes his entire practice to one discipline; in this case, cataract and lens replacement surgery. Dr. Shoemaker is singularly focused on delivering unsurpassed results, and consequent to a life devoted to that commitment, patients travel from across the U.S. and around the world to take advantage of his care.
Under Dr. Shoemaker’s leadership, the Center For Sight cataract team helps people enjoy the benefits of today’s cataract and lens replacement surgery, benefits that include clear vision and reduced dependence on glasses. Dr. Shoemaker has been repeatedly honored as one of America’s "Top Doctors" by the prestigious Top Doctors list published annually by Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd., and has been named a Top Doctor by U.S. News and World Report, and Top Doctor by Sarasota Magazine. Dr. Shoemaker is also among a select group of physicians who serve as FDA investigators for new ophthalmic technologies, including the revolutionary LensAR femtosecond laser system for laser cataract surgery.
A Florida native, Dr. Shoemaker was accepted early to medical school, and received combined B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of Florida. He subsequently completed a residency in Ophthalmology at the Ochsner Clinic and Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans.
In 1986, Dr. Shoemaker founded what was to become Center For Sight. Today, with 7 locations and over 200 staff, including 23 board-certified physicians, Center For Sight is acclaimed as one of the country’s premier eye care facilities. Board-certified by both the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Eye Surgery, Dr. Shoemaker is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American College of Ophthalmic Surgery.
In 2012, Dr. Shoemaker established the Center For Sight Foundation in order to continue his 20-year commitment of providing sight-saving surgeries to people with no means to pay. Together with Center For Sight, the Foundation provides over 100 free sight-saving surgeries each year and is just getting started! To learn more, go to CFSFoundation.org.
Dr. Shoemaker is married with two grown children. He and his wife, Yara, make their home in Sarasota close to the water, where he enjoys his favorite pastimes of sculling, cycling and flats fishing.
