Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) corrects nearsightedness and farsightedness using an intraocular lens implant. RLE is often the procedure of choice for patients who are too nearsighted, too farsighted or have corneas that are too thin for laser vision correction. It is also an excellent alternative for those over the age of 40 and for those individuals who may be showing signs of developing cataracts.
Advanced Premium Intraocular Lenses (IOL)
Due to the presence of presbyopia, most patients over the age of 40 can only dream about life without reading glasses or bifocals. Presbyopia occurs when the natural lens inside the eye loses its flexibility. Eventually, everyone is affected, including those who are nearsighted, farsighted, have cataracts or had perfect vision most of their life. AdvancedPremium IOLs are artificial lenses used in cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. These unique IOLs result in exceptional visual acuity, meaning patients can read prescription bottles, magazines and newspapers while also seeing items at a distance independent of reading glasses or bifocals. In fact, in clinical trials, over 80 percent of patients receiving Advanced Premium IOLs reported never wearing glasses for any activities.
These lenses represent the best implant technology in the world and have produced some of our happiest patients. If you have cataracts or are experiencing the onset of presbyopia, an advanced premium lens procedure offers you a choice to experience your favorite lifestyle activities without dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Dr. Lahners will identify which lens is best for you.
The AcrySof ReSTOR multi-focal lens provides good vision at all distances. Alcon’s patented technology combines the strengths of apodized diffractive and refractive technologies which are similar to the technologies used in microscopes and telescopes, allowing for good vision near and far.
The Crystalens is the only FDA approved accommodating lens that uses the eyes' natural focusing ability to see near, intermediate and at a distance. Eyeonics, the manufacturer of the Crystalens, has engineered the lens so that it actually moves back and forth as you change focus on the different images around you.
